Love and Marriage with Savannah and Spencer Watchman Part 1

Welcome back, FitBody Lifers!

Sometimes the best love stories begin in the most unexpected ways.

A chance connection. A little curiosity. A message that makes you laugh. And before you know it, someone who was once a complete stranger becomes one of the most important people in your life.

In this episode of the Fit Body Lifestyle Love and Marriage series, Jami and Greg welcome IFBB Pro and two-time Olympian Savannah Watchman and her husband, Spencer, for a fun, heartfelt, and wonderfully unpredictable conversation about how their lives came together.

And if you know Savannah, you know there's never a dull moment!

Between hilarious stories, unexpected tangents, plenty of laughter, and some genuinely touching reflections, this episode gives us a glimpse into the people behind the competition photos.

We learn about Savannah's upbringing, her years in cheerleading, Spencer's athletic background, their first connection through Facebook, and the whirlwind romance that led to an engagement and marriage in 2017.

But underneath all the laughter is something meaningful.

The experiences that shape us individually often prepare us for the relationships, opportunities, and dreams that become part of our future.

5 Key Takeaways from the Episode

1. The People Who Believe in Us Can Shape Who We Become

Long before Savannah became an IFBB Pro and two-time Olympian, she was a young athlete discovering her confidence.

Growing up in Utah, Savannah participated in cross-country, track, and cheerleading. She eventually became a cheer captain during her senior year of high school.

What's interesting is that Savannah describes herself as being much more reserved during those years than the outgoing, energetic person we see today.

Her cheerleading coach recognized leadership potential in her and gave her an opportunity to grow.

Savannah credits that coach with helping develop her work ethic, discipline, and confidence—qualities that still serve her in bodybuilding.

The coach has since passed away, but Savannah remembers receiving a message from her expressing pride in what she was accomplishing as a competitor.

That's the kind of impact great mentors can have.

Sometimes someone sees something in us before we're able to recognize it ourselves.

Whether it's a coach, teacher, parent, partner, or friend, the people who challenge and encourage us can influence the direction of our lives.

Never underestimate the power of believing in someone else's potential.

And don't forget that you have the opportunity to be that person for somebody else.

2. Sometimes an Unexpected Detour Leads Somewhere Better

Savannah's college cheerleading experience didn't unfold exactly as she expected.

After cheering during her first year at Dixie State, she wasn't selected to return for another season.

Naturally, that was disappointing.

But rather than allowing that experience to define her, Savannah found another opportunity to get involved on campus.

She joined a group that helped organize student activities and events, developed friendships, and even received financial support through that involvement.

Looking back, she recognizes that the unexpected change opened doors she might not have explored otherwise.

There's a lesson here that applies beautifully to fitness, relationships, careers, and life.

Not every closed door is a setback. Sometimes it's a redirection.

Maybe you don't make the team.

Maybe a competition doesn't go the way you hoped.

Maybe the career opportunity you wanted doesn't materialize.

You can acknowledge the disappointment while still remaining open to what comes next.

Growth doesn't always follow the path we originally planned.

And sometimes the experiences that challenge us most become the ones we eventually appreciate.

3. A Strong Relationship Often Begins With Genuine Connection

Savannah and Spencer's love story began in a way many modern couples can relate to: social media.

They had mutual friends from growing up in the Salt Lake Valley, but they hadn't officially met.

One day, Spencer came across Savannah's Facebook photos and liked them.

Savannah noticed his profile, including a bodybuilding competition photo, and had one very important question:

"Are you real?"

She wasn't familiar with bodybuilding at the time, and Spencer's competition tan made his photo look almost too unusual to be genuine.

She thought her friends might be playing a joke on her with a fake account!

After a little back-and-forth and some Snapchat verification, Savannah discovered that Spencer was, in fact, very real.

The two started talking and eventually arranged to meet in person.

Their first date included pizza at The Pie in Salt Lake City, followed by hours of conversation and watching Schitt's Creek.

They connected so well that they stayed up talking all night.

Spencer even canceled another date he had planned because he wanted to continue spending time with Savannah.

Their connection wasn't built around an elaborate romantic gesture.

It began with curiosity, conversation, laughter, and genuinely enjoying each other's company.

And sometimes those simple moments tell us more about compatibility than anything else.

4. Shared Values Can Matter More Than Following a Traditional Timeline

Savannah and Spencer's relationship moved quickly.

They met in person in early 2017, became an official couple in May, got engaged in July, and married that November.

Spencer even told Savannah he loved her during their first week together.

For some people, that timeline might seem incredibly fast.

But Spencer explains that he felt strongly about their connection from the beginning.

Savannah remembers being surprised by how openly he expressed his feelings, but she also recognized that he was sincere.

That distinction matters.

A meaningful relationship isn't necessarily defined by how quickly or slowly it progresses.

What's more important is whether both people feel respected, comfortable, and aligned in what they're building.

Jami and Greg share how parts of Savannah and Spencer's early relationship remind them of their own story.

And while every couple's journey looks different, the conversation highlights something valuable:

There isn't one universal timeline for love.

What works for one couple may look completely different for another.

The important thing is making thoughtful decisions together, communicating openly, and building a relationship grounded in genuine connection.

5. The Best Partnerships Make Room for Individual Growth

One of the most interesting connections in this episode is how Savannah and Spencer's individual experiences eventually came together through fitness.

Before Savannah ever stepped onto a bodybuilding stage, Spencer had competed in Men's Physique.

His athletic background included football, basketball, cross-country, track and field, and eventually the decathlon at Utah State.

He also spent two years serving a mission in Arizona, an experience he credits with helping him develop independence and maturity.

Savannah, meanwhile, was building her own foundation through athletics, leadership, education, and personal development.

They came into their relationship with different experiences and strengths.

And those differences became part of what they could share.

Spencer ultimately introduced Savannah to bodybuilding, helping open the door to a competitive journey that would eventually take her to the Olympia stage.

Today, Savannah is a two-time Olympian who has also competed internationally, including earning sixth place in her Arnold UK debut.

That's a remarkable journey from someone who initially looked at Spencer's competition photos and wondered whether they were even real!

But the bigger lesson isn't simply that Spencer introduced Savannah to bodybuilding.

It's that healthy relationships can create opportunities for both people to discover new parts of themselves.

Your partner may introduce you to an interest you never expected to love.

They may encourage you to pursue something that feels intimidating.

Or they may recognize potential in you that you haven't fully explored.

The strongest relationships leave room for both people to continue becoming who they're meant to be.
